Throwing
Courses
Our wheel-throwing pottery courses offer a step-by-step route into the world of throwing, designed to support your growth from beginner to confident maker. Taught over 5–7 weeks at our Bristol studio, each course is led by one of experinced team members and offer focused instruction in a relaxed, small-group setting. Our courses are the perfect way to grow your wheel skills and get you feeling confident in the studio. If you're unsure if wheel courses are for you, read further as we summarise each course: Level 1 (4 Wheel workshops + 1 Glazing workshop): You’ll learn the core techniques of wheel throwing, including how to centre clay, pull up the walls, and form basic vessel shapes. You’ll build confidence through repetition and develop an understanding of the materials and the rhythm of the wheel. This course is perfect for those who are new to pottery or have attended a taster lesson. It is a throwing intensive course so all your pottery will be trimmed by our team before your glazing workshop at the end. Levels 2 (6 Wheel workshops +1 Glazing workshop): In level 2 you will learn how to control the clay on the wheel and bringing in more complex techniques such as shaping with tools, pulling handles and most importantly; how to trim your own pottery. This course is designed to lead on after level 1 but can also be joined by someone with some experience in throwing. Level 2.5 (4 Wheel workshops + 1 Glazing workshop): This course is a fun way to use the skills learnt in 1 and 2 to understand new forms. In this course we try some new techniques to sharpen up on handles and how to use the wheel to create more unusual forms. Level 3 (6 Wheel workshops + 1 Glazing workshop): This course focuses on slightly larger and more complex forms, both through throwing and trimming. In this course we look at forms such as lidded pots and foot rings. Level 3.5 (6 Wheel workshops + 1 Glazing workshop): This level is designed as a chance to refine all that has been learnt from previous courses. As with any craft, your skills will grow as you progress so this is a chance to gain a more professional finish to some classic tableware projects. Level 4 (6 Wheel workshops + 1 Glazing Workshop): Level 4 is a chance to try some advanced pottery techniques to really broaden your scope on wheel throwing. In this course we look a specialised techniques to create new avenues for making ie 2 part pottery and throwing off the hump.
