Handbuilding Short Courses

Our hand-building pottery short courses, held at our Bristol studio, offer a structured pathway for developing your skills in clay across Levels 1 to 3. Each course runs over 4–6 weeks and is led by expert ceramicist and Pottymouth founder Meredith Mason, providing hands-on, in-depth guidance in a supportive studio environment.

In Level 1, you’ll focus on creating functional ceramic forms using foundational techniques such as pinch pots, coiling, and slab building. Expect to make practical, everyday pieces—like mugs, bowls, and planters—while gaining a solid understanding of the hand-building process.

Levels 2 and 3 are designed for those ready to push their practice further. These courses explore more sculptural and expressive outcomes, encouraging creative experimentation and self-directed making. You’ll refine your technical skills while also developing your own ideas, style, and approach to surface decoration, form, and structure.

Whether you're just starting out or looking to evolve your ceramics practice, our short courses offer a clear and creative progression through the art of hand-building.

Throwing short courses

Our wheel-throwing pottery short courses offer a step-by-step route into the world of throwing, designed to support your growth from beginner to confident maker. Taught over 4–6 weeks at our Bristol studio, each course is led by expert ceramicist and Pottymouth founder Naomi Stokes, offering focused instruction in a relaxed, small-group setting.

In Level 1, you’ll learn the core techniques of wheel throwing, including how to centre clay, pull up the walls, and form basic vessel shapes. You’ll build confidence through repetition and develop an understanding of the materials and the rhythm of the wheel.

Levels 2 and 3 introduce more advanced and specialised techniques. You’ll begin working with larger amounts of clay and more complex forms—such as lidded vessels, altered shapes, or sets—while refining your skills in trimming, consistency, and finishing. These stages offer a more self-directed approach, allowing you to develop your own throwing style and creative voice with expert support throughout.

Whether you're new to the wheel or looking to refine your technique, these courses provide a clear and supportive path through the art of throwing.
